How and when to upgrade

I recently installed Plex on my 916 - but it immediately said that I should do an upgrade. I think that is because the Synology version lags behind the standard builds. How do I know when to do an upgrade? Will that happen through a Synology package update? or do I need to do some form of a manual update - and if so could you point me to the necessary instructions?
