Hi,
Unfortunately my trusty Homeserver (2011) has bitten the dust and as it's no longer supported by Microsoft, I have decided not to try and resurrect it but to find another solution. I currently have 2 Synology NAS devices, I love the OS and they have been reliable. In fact the PMS was running off one of them with the media stored on the Homeserver. So, I think a new Synology and Plex will make a pefect partnership!
I am using Plex mainly for use with a Chomecast, Amazon TV and mobile devices so all media is carefully prepared to run without transcoding. However there are instances when transcoding maybe required and my Homeserver wasn't capable of doing so. I am therefore looking at the DS415+ & the DS415Play, both of which are compatible with Plex.
As far as I can tell, the main difference (as far as Plex goes) is power & memory so that the DS415+ will transcode via Plex and with the bitrates I am using, I think it might just manage 1080p. The DS415Play will only transcode SD via Plex but of course it can transcode 1080p via the built in Videostation app using the built in hardware transcoding engine - which the DS415+ doesn't have.
The bare bones DS415+ is circa £70 more but for the sake of not getting the hardware transcoding, you seem to get an awful lot more in this model. I could of course build a far more powerful PC HTPC for the money it will cost to buy the DS415+/Play but the NAS gives a simple, reliable, always on solution which I feel is worth it.
I would therefore be grateful for any thoughts/feedback from those that have used Plex on either the DS415+ or DS415Play as these seem to offer the optimum functionality at a sensible price point. Any thoughts on which of the models to go for would also be appreciated!
It is in these circumstances that Amazon Prime is worth having as I can have everything up and running by the weekend :-bd
Many thanks
Andrew
