I cant install plex on my synology

$

Hey Forum

I've had Plex om my synology for quite some time now, and yesterday I restarted my synology which hadn't been done for a long time. After the restart I couldnt access my plex server. So I opened my synology control panel and looked at the apps installed, there it said that i had stopped PMS because it was the wrong version, and it wasnt compatible for the DMS version. So I tryed to uninstall the Plex and reinstall it manually. But it still says that the packet isnt supported by the Diskstation or isnt compatible with the DMS version. So what do I do?

I have a Synology DS413J and the DMS version is: DSM 6.1.2-15132

The manual plex version im trying to install: PlexMediaServer-1.5.6.3790-4613ce077

What do I do?

Best Regards

Creating a library

When trying to add a library, I get to the final step and get the following: "Your changes could not be saved"

As instructed, I select a file type and name it. ("language" dialogue box offers no options)
I'm able to locate the desired folder in Volume 1/video. (all of my video folders have a subfolder labelled @eaDir) But when I attempt to "add library" I get "Your change could not be saved"

Plex version: 3.10.0

Sinology DSM version: DSM 6.1.2-15132

In the package center, for some reason Plex Media Server is identified as:

plex Media Server: 1.5.3.3580-4b377d295

and it is listed as "running"

In location A, I have a DS415+ housing about 3TB worth of video files. The problem is, when I'm not at that location, I have to stream the video files over the internet and sometimes, it has to transcode and stream. At location B, I have a brand new 1817+ that has the entire library backed up but not the database. My question is, can I have the database backed up to the 1817+ and run Plex in Location B without an issue or do I need to setup another database on the 1817+ at location B and connect to that library?

Library Not Updating Automatically

Hi everyone,

I have recently changed hard drives on my NAS and moved to a new volume and since then plex server refuses to automatically detect new files being added. Once I run the manual library update, it adds them in.

I have uninstalled plex, removed the plex folder, reinstalled plex and re added all my media folders to no avail.

My settings are as below:

Many thanks for your assistance in this matter, much appreciated!

Atm I got a ds414 with 2x4tb one in slot 1 and one in slot 2. Only got 4tb of use And it in SHR what would be the best way. Should I go down and buy 2x4tb more to fill up in slot 3 and 4. Or should I go down and buy just a one 8tb hardisk so it fill up so it give me 4tb and the other 4tb I can't use.

I'm mainly using this for movies and tv series and some other stuff.

I'm thinking about buying the wd red. But I also saw seagate ironwolf. Which should I Buy? And pick

It just bcos I was thinking about doing larger hardrive so I can get more cap in the future

PS4 Synology NAS unnecessary transcoding

I've setup Plex Media Server on my Synology NAS DS216j (DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 8) and everything is working great, except that it rejects some media because it feels that it has to transcode it and the NAS is too weak.

Working media, no need to transcode

This file seems to be stripped of the subtitles but now a lot else has changed instead.

What's wrong with the file and how can I make it work with direct play for PS4?

Also, any plans on allowing remuxing on these weaker NASes since it doesn't seem to need to transcode the audio or video streams?

WAN IP and Public IP do not match because of ibvpns

$

This is quite a complicated issue I fear. It's something which has only sprung to light in the past week or two, so I fear something must have changed during one of the updates.

On my Diskstation under Network I am connected to LAN 1, and I also use ibvpns as a VPN.

I can connect to plex.tv fine when I am home, but I cannot connect any longer when I am outside of the home.

I have found that if I turn ibvpns off then I can connect fine again.

When I look at my Plex logs I see:

DEBUG - PublicAddressManager: got WAN IP xx.xx.xx.xx from router
WARN - PublicAddressManager: WAN IP on router does not match public IP from plex.tv

Under Settings > Server > Remote Access, I see the correct WAN IP as the Public IP when ibvpns is turned off (and it connects fine), and the rooted VPN ip as the Public IP when ipvpns is turned on (and it doesn't connect).

How can I resolve this?

The outcome I want is to be able to use VPN on my Diskstation, and to also be able to watch Plex outside of the home.

Weirdly enough this used to work perfectly fine (since November last year), until 1-2 weeks ago.

Failed to run...

I had to reboot my router, with the expected result that all of my local IP addresses have been scrambled and Plex stopped working. Fair enough.

I stopped it on the Diskstation, rebooted the NAS, but I can't restart Plex - I get the error saying that it "Failed to run the package service". I deleted the .pid file and the preferences and rebooted the NAS again, but still no joy.

I checked for updates, but I'm running 1.7.3.3937 and the version available for download is 1.5.7.4016 so the Package Centre won't let me downgrade to it.

Can anyone suggest a solution? I'm running Synology DSM 6.1.2-15132.

I'm trying to add my plex server on a synology NAS to my plex pass account. I'm only getting a errormessage in the web ui and my the console is getting some weird 406 errors, see picture

I'm also attaching the log file for the media server.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Potentially ridiculously noob question...

Hey All -

First I am hanging my head in utter embarrassment as I am unable to sort out the answer to what I think is a total noob question, and I don't really consider myself a noob, but here goes...be gentle! ;)

I just purchased and set up a Synology DS416Play and transferred my movie and music collection to it. My goal is to direct stream plex from the NAS to my 3 Rokus in the house. I've got a server already set up that pulls from a PC I have running 24/7, but I don't want it to pull from there, I want it to pull from the DS directly - I know it can't transcode, and that is 100% fine with me...I can not for the life of me figure out how to get the server to be hosted on the DS. I downloaded the Plex App from the "package store" and when I click it, it opens the web UI and points to the server on the laptop. How do I get it to point to the DS and pull from the files there (the laptop server is pulling from the files on the NAS)....any help would be greatly appreciated!

Transcoding error

I have tried to upgrade from PlexMediaServer-0.9.14.6.1620-e0b7243-x86.spk to PlexMediaServer-1.5.7.4016-25d94bad9-x86.spk.

By giving you the filenames I hope it identifies the system which is a Synology Intel version.

I am transcode tv content which produces .ts files produced by DVBLink using a USB TV tuner adaptor on the Synology system.

WIth the 0.9.14.6... system it transcodes everything. Some of the programmes I transcode included tv programmes originally recorded in the noughtys (around 2006) but recently retransmitted as repeats, but were probably using old tv formats. These programmes transcode without error on version 0.9.14.6.....

When I upgrade to version 1.5.7... it will transcode recently made TV programmes but when I try to transcode these older programs, to sync with an iPad, I get a transcode error. They will however play correctly through a web interface on my Windows 10 pc.

Is there a resolution so I can upgrade to 1.5.7..., as I have had to reinstall the older version (0.9.14.6...), and transcode all programmes to sync to my iPad?

First of all, when I try to install Plex on fresh setup Synology NAS, it throws an error and asks me to check on forums. This is while setting up Plex, so I can't go ahead and enable logs. Second, when I manually give server name and proceed, while adding libraries it says 'Your changes could not be saved.'. This is on a fresh Synology NAS with brand new HDD and latest Plex release (Pass channel). Can someone please help me here?

Plex without Internet access?

Hi everyone,

So today my home experienced an Internet outage when a construction crew hit a line.  Wouldn't of cared so much,  except I learned that PLEX is dependent on Internet access to run.

I have a Synology that run PLEX and all my content is local.

Is there a way to operate PLEX when the Internet fails?  Or should I begin looking at other alternatives?

Plex Media Server Hardware Transcoding on Synology DS216+II

Please keep HW Transcoding with Plex Media Server ("PMS") is still in an experimental stage
I did manage to do get HW Transcoding working on my new Synology DS216+II by doing to following.

  1. Stop your current PMS
  2. Download the PlexMediaServer build 1.6.0 - Hardware Transcoding Preview 3 for Synogly from this link
    https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server/1.6.0.3720-d82f85387/PlexMediaServer-1.6.0.3720-d82f85387-x86_64.spk
  3. Install downloaded PMS. If you current PMS is higher than 1.6.0 you need to remove your current PMS installation first.
  4. Start the new installed PMS
  5. Start Plex and goto Server -> Transcode and turn on the hardware acceleration option.
  6. Open a ssh console and create the following script
    ** /usr/local/etc/rc.d/startup.sh**

    #!/bin/bash
    #NAS Startup Script

    #Access for HW Decoder Plex
    chmod 777 /dev/dri/card0
    chmod 777 /dev/dri/controlD64
    chmod 777 /dev/dri/renderD128

    exit

After the creating of the script. Run the command below to set proper permissions.
sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/etc/rc.d/startup.sh

  1. Reboot your NAS and HW Transcoding should be enabled on your Synology DS216+II

I had PlexMediaServer-1.5.5.3634-995f1dead-arm78.spk running on my Synology DS416j.
It is not responding, even after the service has been stopped, updated to PlexMediaServer-1.5.7.4016-25d94bad9-arm7.spk and restarted.

The protocoll shows a lot of traffic from another night ... where I was not active ...
And can not find a file it is looking for powering up...

Plex iNotifier: Auto-update a remote Plex Media Server when new content is added on NAS

$

0

EDIT: I've moved this over to a GitHub repository, which is much easier for tracking changes. I also renamed it from "Plex Notifier" to "Plex iNotifier" to help avoid confusion with the "Plex Notify" application. You're still welcome to report issues here, or submit an issue ticket on GitHub.

The GitHub repository is here: https://github.com/talisto/plex-inotifier

Plex iNotifier

Plex is an amazing piece of software. One issue with Plex Media Server, though, is that it doesn't auto-update the library when there are changes on connected network shares. This can be annoying if you run your PMS on a different machine (e.g. Nvidia Shield, Mac Mini, etc) than where your media library is stored (e.g. NAS), as you either have to trigger an update on PMS manually when adding/moving/renaming content or wait for the library update interval to kick in.

So, I wrote a script to automate that (borrowed heavily from here).

The script works by tying into inotify on the NAS, which is a kernel subsystem that notices changes to the filesystem and reports those changes to applications. The script uses inotify to monitor the media directories on the NAS for changes, then connects to the remote Plex Server's web API to find the appropriate media section to refresh. If it finds a matching section, it uses the web API to send an update command to that section.

Installation

  1. Clone the GitHub repository or download the latest zipfile.
  2. Make sure you have "Python3" installed.
  3. You'll need to install the "pynotify" Python module. The easiest way is to install the Python EasyInstall utility; Shell into your server, and run: wget https://bootstrap.pypa.io/ez_setup.py -O - | python3 then run: easy_install pyinotify
  4. Save the plex-inotify.py script somewhere on your NAS/fileserver, e.g. /usr/local/bin
  5. Edit the plex_server_host variable near the top of your script to match the IP address of your Plex Server. If you have local DNS resolution, you can use a hostname instead.
  6. Edit the path_maps variable to map the local paths of the media shares on your fileserver to their corresponding library names in your Plex Media Server.
  7. You should change the daemonize variable to False for testing purposes until you're sure that everything is working properly.
  8. Try running the script with python3 plex-inotify.py, and if all goes well, it will load up without errors :)

If you set daemonize to True, then the script will fork itself into a background task when you run it. It will stay running even if you log out of the shell.

IMPORTANT: With the security changes in PMS version 1.1.0, if your Plex Media Server is signed in to a plex.tv account, you'll need to set the plex_account_token variable (see "troubleshooting" below) or you can add the IP address of your fileserver to the following advanced preference: Settings > Server > Network > List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth.

Troubleshooting

  • If you see a bunch of errors that say something like Errno=No space left on device (ENOSPC), then your inotify watcher limit is too low. Run sysctl -n -w fs.inotify.max_user_watches=16384 and then try again. Keep raising the number until the errors go away.

  • If you see an error that says Errno=No such file or directory (ENOENT), then you didn't configure your paths_maps properly. Make sure each entry in the list is a local path to your media on the NAS and then the corresponding library/section name on your PMS.

  • If you're getting an error that says urllib.error.HTTPError: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized, then you need to set the plex_account_token variable. Follow this link for instructions on how to get your account token. Make sure that when you're setting the variable, you wrap the token in quotes, like this: plex_account_token = 'A2ekcFXjzPqmefBpv8da'

Let me know if you find this useful!

Synology - unable to see new server

Hi, long time Plex user, first time with an issue i cant figure out.

I have a new Synology DS1517+
running DSM 6.1.2-15132
I have installed Plex 1.7.4.4.017

When i open the Plex media server app, i am prompted to 'sign in' after signing in, i can see my existing server on my PC, a remote server, and my shared servers but no new server from the NAS.

In the settings>servers tab i can select from only my two existing servers, no new option for the nas server

firewall is off;
MTU is set to auto
i have fully rebooted after install
Logs show plex is running.

i know in older versions of plex you needed to make ass your server to plex.tv but i presume this is no longer needed.

Synology DS3615xs vs DS3617xs

$

Synology just released as new NAS, the DS3617xs. I want to let people know that if they were considering the DS3617xs over the DS3615xs that technically speaking there is only one difference in regards to Plex usage and that is the CPU. I own both units and have completely dismantled them for hardware comparison. Everything inside and out are identical with the exception of the CPU and cooler. Of course the motherboard is updated to handle the FCBGA1667 socket, but other than that they are the same. Yes the DS3617xs can run with 48Gb instead of 32Gb of the DS3615xs, but Plex does not need much memory to do any of its work. I think I max'd out at around 2Gb with a full load from Plex. I have 4Gb installed.

The DS3615xs uses a i3-4130 Haswell CPU and the DS3617xs uses a Xeon® Processor D-1527. Now several months ago I decided to upgrade my DS3615xs with a faster CPU. I found the best CPU to be a Xeon E3-1246L v3 Haswell. I could have shelled out another $400 and got the Xeon E3-1286L v3, but he spec were not that much higher and did not warrant the extra cash.

Spec compare here:
http://ark.intel.com/compare/91195,80916,75121,77480

You will need to upgrade the CPU cooler as well. I used the Noctua NH-D9L. Key here is the socket support (FCLGA1150). Now I could have gone with a i7-4765T, but it lack the higher CPU clock speed, 3Ghz vs 3.9Ghz in turbo mode. Base frequency is about 1.5Ghz in difference. Even the DS3617xs' CPU has a slower base frequency of the DS3615xs by 1.2Ghz

There is about $1,000 difference with both units current availability and you can pickup the Xeon E3-1246L v3 for about $370 on Amazon and the Noctua NH-D9L for $55. Unit runs around 40C at full load with this setup.

Hope someone finds this useful.
