Hardware Transcoding on DS916+ - Should I return it while I still can?

I am a relatively new user to Plex on a NAS. I installed Plex on my 4 year old homemade desktop last year and it is doing awesome, however there are a few issues that I hoped a NAS would solve (my desktop uses a ton of electricity being one of them). I looked into the Synology DS916+ and saw it was supported by plex but didnt see the star next to 1080p transcoding "supported" section. Most of my movies are bluray mkv's, however a few titles are high bitrate and the NAS struggles with almost anything from that category (but runs on my PC fine). It was only after the purchase until i dug deeper that plex does not use the hardware transcoding of the Intel chip.

My primary reason in getting a NAS would be so I could have a more reliable Plex server, so right now it is not doing what I wanted for the 1080p movies. I keep hearing rumors that Plex will eventually support the Intel N3710 on the DS916+, but I am not holding my breath.

I just purchased the DS916+ about 10 days ago. Should I return the NAS while I still can, or roll the dice and hope Plex supports the hardware transcoding at a later date? I am really happy with the Synology for other purposes, but for Plex, it is not working for me.

Thanks,
chrisivc

Synology DS916+ to a DS1817+

Hello,

I recently bought a DS916+ and I'm actually pretty satisfied with it, if not I realized that 4 hard drives is not going to cut it for me (neither adding an external box for additional drives), and since I'm still in the return window, I was thinking of swapping it for a DS1817+.

I'm worried that the performance with the DS1817+ and Plex won't be as good as on the DS916+, based on the tech specs sheet found at the Synology website suggests that the DS1817+ does not come with hardware transcoding capabilities.

Any suggestion?

LiveTV/RecordedTV stops frequently

Plex Version 1.10.0.4516 (64 bit version, hardware acceleration enabled)
Synology NAS 216+ (INTEL Celeron N3050 dual core)
DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 2
HD HomeRun Connect: Model: HDHR4-2US Firmware: 20170930

Basically if I use any client (iOS, AppleTV, Chrome Web App on Windows 10) the video playback from either live tv or recorded tv will play for a couple of minutes, stop and give the spinning yellow wheel, then start again.

Playback on the HD Homerun is fine using all other apps on all platforms, perfectly smooth playback. The HD HomeRun is on a wired connection for most devices (including the plex server).

My initial thought was that I simply don't have enough CPU for smooth playback, but I have enabled hardware acceleration in the Transcoder section of the settings which has significantly reduced CPU usage, it never spikes beyond 60-70% now, but playback is still not improved.

First time posting an issue... not really sure what is needed to help troubleshoot this or what else I can do to help improve this. Any help or direction would be very much appreciated.

Can't Login to local IP for Plex Server....keeps redirecting

Anyone else running in to this? I can login to plex.tv and "Launch" but then its an indirect connection which is slow. Previously I could just hit my internal IP, login with my plex account email and I'm off to the races. Now I'll login but it keeps redirecting me and showing me the "sign in" screen. In the URL I can see after I click login at my local IP, it redirects to the app.plex.tv URL and shows the sign-in screen. I'm using the edge browser, so I'll try another browser shortly....just wondering if anyone else has run in to this.

Thanks in advance!

Poor Performance

I have a lifetime plex pass, however I can't use Plex as the server keeps crashing/timing out ! The most frequent thing I get from Plex is "There was an unexpected error" or it just never loads. The Plex app on the NAS keeps pushing the CPU upto 100%. I have stopped most packages on the NAS to ensure memory is free and stopped any media indexing.

This never used to happen with older versions of the Plex Media Server software! I am running a dedicated Synology DS1512+ NAS with the latest version of Plex on it.

The playback devices are:

Apple TV 2nd & 3rd gen
Samsung Tv
Xbox One.
iPad
iMac

All gigabit connection or 5Ghz wifi

NAS CPU - Intel Atom D2700
CPU Clock Rate 2.13Ghz
Memory 3072 Mb

Cyber Monday NAS for Plex

So I'm looking to get a NAS here in the next couple hours and am deadlocked between the DS418play and the TS-453A. They are within ~$30 of each other, so I'm wondering what will be a better Plex Media Server? Since there isn't a general NAS sub-forum, I thought I'd ask here. All of my media is encoded in MKV containers right now. I play videos primarily on a PMP HTPC and iPad. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Batch Conversion from NAS either stand alone or using OSX

Apologies in advance that this is likely a VERY asked question on here, but I couldn't find the answer specific to my scenario.

I'm currently running a Synology DS116 (ARM 385, 1800MHz Dual Core, 1g Ram) with Firmware 6.1.4-15217 Update 2.
The NAS was never intended to run PLEX but after I didn't end up needing it for it's intended project, I figured why not.
Currently it plugs directly into my Nighthawk D7800 via a LAN cable and the external connection speed is around 100/40.
The NAS runs independently and I typically stream/view from it on either an Ipad/Macbook/Phone/Xbox One/PS4 or Chromecast, depending on the device, it's viewed either internally on Wifi, or Externally on Data/Unrelated Wifi.

When I set the device up I dumped around 1.7tb of TV/Movies onto it and have set it up so from my phone I can remotely cue downloads of programs and they drop to the correct folder, plex scrapes it and they're ready to play when I get home. Perfet scenario!

Problem is that I'm still somewhat discovering what files work with the limited transcoding of the device, and which ones don't.

Obviously MKV is a bit too much for it most of the time, but MP4 is aok. My Xbox One seems to handle almost everything, but I'd really like to identify and convert all the files which aren't capable of playing on devices such as an iPad remotely.

Is there a clear and easy solution here?

For what I can tell, the device isn't powerful enough to transcode or even web optimise most video. So since I don't have a desktop system and my laptop comes with me everywhere, I'll have to sit some time aside to use 'Finder' (OSX) to search for file types like MKV or if there's something powerful enough to find video resolution use that, copy them to my laptop, use something such as Handbrake to convert them to a temp folder, and then copy them BACK to the NAS and have plex rescan.

Since this is a pretty fiddly and annoying process, does anyone have any shortcuts or suggestion here to make it easier? Any experience in what Handbrake settings would be best? Is there something I've missed? All help is appreciated.

Cheers!

Support for the Synology DS418play

I just bought the new Synology DS418play. I was planning on installing Plex (Media Server) on this device, but this package does not seem to be available in the package manager. It is also not listed on the synology website as a supported device (https://www.synology.com/nl-nl/dsm/packages/Plex_Media_Server).
If I understand correctly, Plex is working on adding support for this device?

Just to be clear: on the forum I found some discussions regarding the problems with the Realtek processors for the DS418 series. However, mine is a DS418play, which has the Intel J3355 processor.

DSM 6.2beta, DS718+ & x265 hardware transcoding?

x264 hardware transcoding with Plex seems to work fine, however x265 doesn't. Anyone knows the current status of x265 transcoding & Plex? Videostation transcodes x265 but the result is pretty terrible in terms of quality..
I have not expanded RAM at the moment, if that might disable x265 transcoding(?)

Missing Server after Upgrade to v1.10.0.4516

I upgraded my Plex Server on my Synology NAS DS916+ to the latest version yesterday. I now can't find my server on the Plex site and can't connect to it even though it says it is running. Anyone else have this issue or know what I can try? I run another server on a Mac Mini and another on a Shield TV. I've upgraded the Mac Mini to the latest version as well and have no issues on that one.

Synology DS416 Play issues

Hi

I have tried for so long to get this to work now.
I have given up and tried again.....

Setup:

Pc: I7oc, SSD etc
Bandwidth: 1gbit/1gbit
NAS: Syn DS416p
router: asus RT-AC87U

I have opened the ports as far as i know, but they should not be the issue,
Ive tried to use the router as a acesspoint and thereby no NAT function. But still not working.

Now i have even managed too remove Plex/folders and cant install it again, so i will reset/format the nas and try again.

Biggest problem so far:

I can only install the PLEX media server from the synology package center.(And i read that version is outdated)
I cant find the "Plex media server app" for Synology to download the latest version directly from PLEX website like i did before.

Please can someone help me via Teamviewver or something? I do anything.... Tried for around 6 hours just today.....

Hi,

Just bought the DS118 and looking for an installer package. Though in previous forum topics, CPUs like the RTD1293 are in progress when it comes to development of installer packages (e.g. @chukpa's reply on different topic).

So, does the same applies to the RTD1296?

thanks for helping out!

cheers

There was a problem signing into plex

Hi, new Plex user after purchasing a Synology DS416play.

Spent day & half transferring my media from my Thecus (running Twonky) onto my new Synology NAS and excited to use it I installed Plex thinking this would be a quick way to start watching various media.

When I log in Plex prompts me that there is an "Unclaimed Server". When I subsequently attempt to log in I get the error "There was a problem signing into plex". I tried both my plex email + p/w as well as my plex username + password. Neither work.

I googled and saw troubleshooting on this forum so I have:
1. checked the NAS & computer times - both are correct
2. turned off Defender (firewall) - this did not work
3. I tried to read the plex.log yet there was so much content that this was fruitless

I have now wasted a heap of time and am sure there must be a quick fix as I must be missing something.

I can log into Plex.tv and my account seems to be ok.

Unsure what do to now and hope someone can help?

Plex update changes the folder permissions

On my synology i have created a folder that is shared on my network, so my family can access it true another PC and this folder is the plex library. I have a couple of users on my synology, and some of the users can read the folder others can read and write the shared folder. But every time i update the plex server it resets the shared folder permission that only the 'plex' user can access the folder

Fresh Plex Install is Not Updating Library Automatically

$

Hello,

I am running Plex 6.1 and installed Plex Version 3.20.5 manually through the package center. As I add new items to my library, Plex does not see the updates. Here are my settings:

On - Update my library automatically
Your library will be updated automatically when changes to library folders are detected.

Off - Run a partial scan when changes are detected
When changes to library folders are detected, only scan the folder that changed.

Off - Include music libraries in automatic updates
Linux systems limit the maximum number of watched directories; this may cause problems with large music libraries.

Off - Update my library periodically

I found this FAQ, but am not familiar with using Putty.

https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/191000/faqs-read-this-first

Q18: How do I manually set file permissions using SSH?
DSM 6: Login as admin, using your NAS admin password in PuTTY or Terminal, and then you must first issue the command sudo -su root and enter your admin password again before entering the following commands:
For your Media Folder/s:
cd volume1
chmod -R 777 Media
chown -R admin:users Media
For The Plex Folder:
cd volume1
chmod -R 777 Plex
chown -R plex:users Plex

Note: If your Plex media folders are not in a folder named 'Media' then insert the appropriate folder name/address in place of Media.
Also, do not simply read the permissions, you should reset them regardless. Set the permissions to 600 first, then go back and set them to 777. This ensures that the permissions have been re-written to disk properly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Plex iNotifier: Auto-update a remote Plex Media Server when new content is added on NAS

$

EDIT: I've moved this over to a GitHub repository, which is much easier for tracking changes. I also renamed it from "Plex Notifier" to "Plex iNotifier" to help avoid confusion with the "Plex Notify" application. You're still welcome to report issues here, or submit an issue ticket on GitHub.

The GitHub repository is here: https://github.com/talisto/plex-inotifier

Plex iNotifier

Plex is an amazing piece of software. One issue with Plex Media Server, though, is that it doesn't auto-update the library when there are changes on connected network shares. This can be annoying if you run your PMS on a different machine (e.g. Nvidia Shield, Mac Mini, etc) than where your media library is stored (e.g. NAS), as you either have to trigger an update on PMS manually when adding/moving/renaming content or wait for the library update interval to kick in.

So, I wrote a script to automate that (borrowed heavily from here).

The script works by tying into inotify on the NAS, which is a kernel subsystem that notices changes to the filesystem and reports those changes to applications. The script uses inotify to monitor the media directories on the NAS for changes, then connects to the remote Plex Server's web API to find the appropriate media section to refresh. If it finds a matching section, it uses the web API to send an update command to that section.

Installation

  1. Clone the GitHub repository or download the latest zipfile.
  2. Make sure you have "Python3" installed.
  3. You'll need to install the "pynotify" Python module. The easiest way is to install the Python EasyInstall utility; Shell into your server, and run: wget https://bootstrap.pypa.io/ez_setup.py -O - | python3 then run: easy_install pyinotify
  4. Save the plex-inotify.py script somewhere on your NAS/fileserver, e.g. /usr/local/bin
  5. Edit the plex_server_host variable near the top of your script to match the IP address of your Plex Server. If you have local DNS resolution, you can use a hostname instead.
  6. Edit the path_maps variable to map the local paths of the media shares on your fileserver to their corresponding library names in your Plex Media Server.
  7. You should change the daemonize variable to False for testing purposes until you're sure that everything is working properly.
  8. Try running the script with python3 plex-inotify.py, and if all goes well, it will load up without errors :)

If you set daemonize to True, then the script will fork itself into a background task when you run it. It will stay running even if you log out of the shell.

IMPORTANT: With the security changes in PMS version 1.1.0, if your Plex Media Server is signed in to a plex.tv account, you'll need to set the plex_account_token variable (see "troubleshooting" below) or you can add the IP address of your fileserver to the following advanced preference: Settings > Server > Network > List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth.

Troubleshooting

  • If you see a bunch of errors that say something like Errno=No space left on device (ENOSPC), then your inotify watcher limit is too low. Run sysctl -n -w fs.inotify.max_user_watches=16384 and then try again. Keep raising the number until the errors go away.

  • If you see an error that says Errno=No such file or directory (ENOENT), then you didn't configure your paths_maps properly. Make sure each entry in the list is a local path to your media on the NAS and then the corresponding library/section name on your PMS.

  • If you're getting an error that says urllib.error.HTTPError: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized, then you need to set the plex_account_token variable. Follow this link for instructions on how to get your account token. Make sure that when you're setting the variable, you wrap the token in quotes, like this: plex_account_token = 'A2ekcFXjzPqmefBpv8da'

Let me know if you find this useful!
