Synology upgrade advice

Hi, I've been running a DS212 for around six years with Plex installed but as it can't transcode media for my XBox One and TV clients I've been running a server on a separate desktop PC as well.

I'm thinking about upgrading the Diskstation and I would hope to be able to run the Plex server and transcode successfully for the clients.

Two models I'm considering are: DS218+ and DS718+. Does anyone have advice on which would suit a Plex server better?

They seem to be very similar but the 218+ has a Intel Celeron J3355 while the 718+ has a J3455.

Thanks in advance

Josh

Can't claim Server

I am running a Synology DS218+ and I can't seem to claim the server? I am running DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 1. What can I try? SO far I have tried logging out and into Plex. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Plex Server on the DS218+ and still nothing. When I attempt to Claim Server it merely cycles the "Claim Server" display.

Matxh issues - Synology 218+

Version 3.34.1

Ive owned my 218+ a few weeks now and the match function has been sporadic. The thumbnails show scenes from the move, the fix match function does not return any results from TMDB etc. Ive even tried the IMDB identifier in the title.

Most of my library is now matched, but new additions generally exhibit this issue.

Can anyone offer some help please?

Naming conventions are just like what I used with Kodi..

Folder = Movie title (Year)
File = Move title (Year)

Anyone running Plex on DS718+ with DSM

I'm running DSM6.2b on my DS718+ and I'm having major issues with Plex. Not sure if it's DSM or Plex but still, but would be interesting to hear from other DS718+ users how Plex is working for them (perhaps both 6.2b and non 6.2b users).
The problems I'm having (with iOS-devices):

  • Videos doesn't play at all (sometimes)
  • Videos play without subtitles (stop and play again and the subs are there)
  • Subtitles out of sync. Stop and start movie and they work.
  • AppleTV4k playback doesn't work most of the time.
All media I've tried are x.264 or x.265.
I'm most curious how Plex works on non 6.2b on DS718+ if it would be worth the trouble of downgrading...

Remote Access for Plex on my DS418play server no longer works

I had some success getting my Plex software but it looks like it can't get to work.

I live in an apartment in NYC and our building has these EDIMax wireless access points in each unit. The internet company was nice enough to hardwire a my Netgear Nighthawk Router into the access point so that I could get stringer wireless signals. My DS418 play is currently connect to the Netgear router. I installed Plex and I noticed that my private and public Internet IP addresses were different. After reading some documentation on the Plex site, I went into my router and forwarded the port to 32400. I stopped and restarted Plex and I had successfully enabled the Remote Access. A few hours later, I checked again and remote access was no longer enabled. I have tried just about everything and I still can't get it to work again.

Any suggestions?

DS418play - Looking for servers...

Hi there,

New to Plex - recently upgraded my DS213 to a DS418play so that I could switch to Plex.

I've used the FAQ to install the Plex Server on my NAS however am stuck with "Looking for servers" when I login to the app on the DS418play, or at plex.tv.

I've tried to logout of both and log back in, delete the devices under settings, etc., nothing is working for me.

Can someone help?

Thanks very much.

Need to find a suitable solution for home media.

Hi guy,
I am currently fixing my house and I want to have a small room for home theater so I can watch movie and listen to music peacefully in there. I also have a 4k smart TV in my bedroom and planning to buy a PC as well. To be more specific, I have 2 separate room:
-Bedroom:
+ a 49" 4K TV
+ a PC
-Home theater:
+ A/V Receiver: AVR-X1300W
+ HD Player: HiMedia q10 pro
+ Wifi router
+ NAS
I recently bought a 6 TB WD RED 3.5" HDD. Outside from that, I have not bought anything yet. I want to stream 4k contents to my TV and movie with high-quality audio in my home theater. Also I prefer to use NAS as a Plex server more than using my PC. Now I don't want to spend more than $200 for Wifi router and $500 for NAS. I hope you guy can help me to find a suitable solution for this one.
Thanks.

Running PlexPy from different server to PMS?

I have PMS setup on my Nvidia Shield, now after doing some research to my disappointment you can't installed PlexPy on the device.
I have a Synology NAS where all the actual content files are stored and wanted to know whether I could use this device to run PlexPy or does it need to be run on the same device as the PMS?

Dear Synology Support & Development,
Bought a Synology DS218play in full trust that you would support a PLEX Media Server on any Synology Platform.
How wrong could I be? Read all about the fact that this ARM processor is not supported yets etc etc.
PLEASE - compile a Media Server release on this processor.

[SOLVED] Synology DS1511+ - Upgrade PlexMediaServer 32bits to 64bits?

Hello,

I want to upgrade to Plex 64-bit version. How should I proceed without losing my data?
Upgrade PlexMediaServer-1.10.1.4602-f54242b6b-x86 to PlexMediaServer-1.11.0.4666-fc63598ba-x86_64

My config:

  • DS1511+ (Intel Atom D525)
  • DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 5
  • Currently: Plex 1.10.1.4602-f54242b6b (x86 32bits)

Solution:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/259923/dsm-6-1-upgrade-and-pms-confirmed-diskstation-models-thank-you

Method B:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Uninstall PMS
  3. Upgrade DSM 6.0 and proceed with post-upgrade internal migrations
  4. Install PMS
  5. Allow PMS to stabilize post installation (60-90 seconds before CPU calms)

Thanks

Movie Scraper Inconsistent

Hey folks,

I have a bit of an annoyance happening.

When I add a new movie to my library and the scan finds it, downloads the metadata and artwork, it almost always sets the default art on the movie as one of the background or fanart images, not the movie poster. So I have to edit ever movie manually and pick the poster art (which is there already as an option in the poster section).

I'm used to Kodi for all my local streaming, and it never has a problem picking the right poster. It uses themoviedb.org and thetvdb.com to scrape art and data.

So I set the Library preferences in Plex server to favor those sources too, but the problem persists.

Any ideas why this is happening? I pretty much have to do this for ever movie I add, with very few exceptions. It took a while to do 390 flicks too.

Advise for newb on Plex and Syno 918+

Hello All,

I recently found Plex and I am loving it so far, running right now as I type on my Win10

I just bought a 918+ with 4gb ram upgrade and 4 4tb WD red's.

Any advise on how best practices for configuring the 918+ for plex media server usage ? ie ex4 vs brts, raid levels etc?

I was thinking RAID 5 or RAID 10 with BTRFS but after doing some browsing on the Syno forum's there seem's to be confusion over this and which is better ex4 or BRTFS?

Thanks in advance

Plex Media Server Hardware Transcoding on Synology DS216+II

$

As of version Plex Media server 1.9.3.4290, the script below is no longer required and Plex Hardware Transcoding works out-of-the-box.

==========================================================================================================
Please keep in mind that HW Transcoding with Plex Media Server ("PMS") is still in an experimental stage and requires a Plex Pass.
I did manage to do get HW Transcoding working on my new Synology DS216+II by doing to following. The first solution is the "safe" solution and requires no knowledge of SSH at all. The second solution requires some knowledge of SSH, and this solution will be implemented by Plex in the next release

Solution 1 (no SSH knowledge required)
1. Stop your current PMS
2. Download the PlexMediaServer build 1.8.1.4140 - Hardware Transcoding Preview 4 for Synogly from this link
https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server/1.8.1.4140-82ea538ca/PlexMediaServer-1.8.1.4140-82ea538ca-x86_64.spk
3. Install downloaded PMS. If you current PMS is higher than 1.8.1 you need to remove your current PMS installation first.
4. Start the new installed PMS
5. Start Plex and goto Server -> Transcode and turn on the hardware acceleration option.
6. Go to Control Panel -> Task Scheduler
7. Create -> Triggered Task -> User-defined script
8. In General, Task: "Allow transcoder hardware access", User: root, Event: Boot-up, Check Enabled
9. In Task settings, run command:

     if [ -d /dev/dri ]; then
           chgrp video /dev/dri -R
           chmod 755 /dev/dri
           chmod 666 /dev/dri/*
     fi

10 . Restart PMS and HW Transcoding should be enabled on your Synology DS216+II

Solution 2 (requires SSH knowledge)
1. Stop your current PMS
2. Download the PlexMediaServer build 1.8.1.4140 - Hardware Transcoding Preview 4 for Synogly from this link
https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server/1.8.1.4140-82ea538ca/PlexMediaServer-1.8.1.4140-82ea538ca-x86_64.spk
3. Install downloaded PMS. If you current PMS is higher than 1.8.1 you need to remove your current PMS installation first.
4. Start the new installed PMS
5. Start Plex and goto Server -> Transcode and turn on the hardware acceleration option.
6. Open an SSH terminal session and modify the following file

file: /lib/udev/rules.d/60-fix-plex-hw-transcoding.rules
Currently: SUBSYSTEM=="dvb", GROUP="video"
Replace with: SUBSYSTEM=="drm", GROUP="video", MODE="0660"

7.Restart PMS and HW Transcoding should be enabled on your Synology DS216+II

Plex is investigating a solution to make the PMS with hardware decoding working out-of-the-box on a Synology NAS. The issue is caused on how Synology configured the access the transcoder device on the NAS. Solution 2 will be implemented in the next PMS release with hardware transcoding.

More info:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/282794/hardware-transcoding-preview-issues-platform-synology

Edit August 11th, 2017: Changed the script as advised by Plex. Thanks to @ChuckPA from Plex for all his efforts.
Edit August 24th 2017: Configure script via Task Scheduler, so no ssh is required. Thanks to @mhofman for the tip.
Edit August 24th 2017: Created 2 solutions (one with, and one without SSH knowledge).
Edit October 3rd 2017: Script 2 has been implemented in PMS version 1.9.3.4290 and higher.

Plex and 4K HDR demo files wont play on LG OLED Tv

$

Hi, I was wondering why I cannot play a 4K HDR demo file (LG Chess) that lives on my DS916+ NAS through the plex app on my LG OLED55C6T tv? When I access the file using the TV's device connector it plays perfectly but not if I use the plex app. This tells me the tv can play the file but the plex server app on the 916+ is possibly doing something so I get "There was an unknown problem playing this item" (an unexpected error occured downloading the media) message.

Is this a synology issue or perhaps a plex server issue? I had heard something about setting profiles for devices so the server just sends the file unaltered to certain devices? Any ideas?

Thanks you for any help you can give.

Help with remote access

I have PMS set up on a Synology NAS (DS216j). Everything seems to work fine locally. However I don't seem to be able to enable remote access.

My setup is Synology NAS cabled to Apple Time Capsule cabled to router supplied by my ISP. The Apple Time Capsule is set to Bridge Mode. The router supplied by my ISP is a Calix 844G-1. All firmware is up to date.

PMS detects the double router setup but simply advises that one router is set to bridge. It then goes into setting up manual port forwarding. Have done that too - at least I think so. All to no avail.

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Ian

Metadata keeps getting refreshed when opening item, resulting in time out

$

After clicking on a movie in my library (which should result in playback or showing of the moviesheet), the metadata gets updated.

After the metadata is updated (no visible changes in the data or images) this particular item can be clicked on for a day or so, without being updated.

A day (or a few days) later it starts over again, and the metadata is updated again.

It only seems to happen with movies, not tv shows.

Depending in which player I am using, it results in a long loading time or even a time out.

- Plex Web App; it results in a long loading time (the update has to be finished and processed) but eventually the moviesheet is shown (or the movie plays).

- aTV 3 (plexconnect); this results in a time out, going back with the 'menu' button of the aTV and selecting the item again usually works as a workaround.

Issue/question:

I would really like to know why the metadata gets downloaded/refreshed everytime I click an item, because this results in a time out/server unreachable at the aTV (plexconnect).

When there is no metadata to be downloaded (so when I try again after the update), there are no issues with the aTV and it shows the moviesheet instantly. Therefor I really expect it to be the PMS who is the cause of the time out/unreachable.

Why does PMS do this? I do not need the update everytime I click an item, periodically update or automatic update upon changes would be fine for me?

And if this update is needed for PMS, is there a way around this time out?

Setup:

PMS (0.9.12.3)

Agents: The movie database (and that is the only plugin which I have checked)

Update library automatically is ticked

Partial scan is not ticked

Update library regularly is not ticked

Synology (DS213, DSM 5.2)

I know this is a slow server, but all media has been converted to mp4/m4v, so no transcoding is needed. Playback is good, so no problems with that.

Tried workarounds:

Changing the settings in the library, so not updating automatically or doing a partial scan. I have tried all combinations, not having any effect on my problem.

Changing the metadata agents, this resulted in a complete refresh of the library, but after that was finished it started over again. Also cleaned and optimized the database.

Selecting an item in my library (metadata is already there and it is correct, as are the posters)

[attachment=51096:Step 1 - selecting item.png]

The page starts loading and at the bottom you see it is updating and processing the metadata

[attachment=51097:Step 2 - metadata update.png]

After it is finished it shows the moviesheet, with (at first sight) the same metadata and posters

[attachment=51098:Step 3 - Moviesheet result (same as before the update).png]
