Having issues setting up my 2nd server.

Hopefully someone can help me out on this one because i am totally lost. A few years ago my main Plex Media Server was on my NAS. It got to the point where I needed more room and wanted transcoding capabilities so i moved everything to my computer. So i currently have my main server from my computer. The NAS got re-purposed as a VPN and routing box until i gave it as a Christmas gift to my parents. I share my media with them. Recently i have been having issues with consistent internet so i am attempting to set up Plex on the NAS again so they can watch stuff locally without having to stream it over the internet. In the past i could have more than one server so if that is not the case anymore please let me know. Here is the setup i have running for my parents:

NAS: DS411slim
DMS: DSM 5.2-5644 Update 3
Plex (on NAS): 0.9.15.2.1663-7efd046
Router: Netgear Nighthawk R7000

The problem i am receiving is when i start up Plex on the NAS, and sign in, i am presented with a message where the server would normally be that says "A server could not be found. Download and install Plex Media Server, then sign the server in.". It also says it's looking for servers above that. I have shutdown my home server to keep it out of the way while i try to set the NAS up. I know i have the ports forwarded correctly. I went through them meticulously. The cable is a cat 5 that i have tested and am getting no resistance through. Jumbo frames are not enabled. No firewall rules and all ports are open on the NAS. I have attempted to open the Preferences.xml and modify it as one post told me i should try, but the only entries i see are "MachineIdentifier", "ProcessedMachineIdentifier", "AnonymousMachineIdentifier", "agentAutoEnabled.com.plexapp.agents.lastfm.Artists.com.plexapp.agents.vevo", "GracenoteUser", and "MetricsEpoch". I have uninstalled and re-installed. I have SSHed into it and deleted all of the plex directories and reinstalled everything. I am presented with the same message when i launch from plex.tv. I have tried chrome, firefox, and IE. I've tried accessing it from different devices. I haven't been this stumped in a long time.

If anyone has any ideas i would appreciate the input.

Request for correction to Plex 'Profiles' on Synology NAS

$

I have a DS1815+ as my primary server (televisions and remote connection) and a DS1813+ as my secondary server (tablets and laptops). The DS1815+ handles all the hardwired connections while the DS1813+ handles wifi.

Roku added MKV container support to its firmware for the Roku 3 several months ago (around September), withdrew it due to bugs, and later re-issued it late November. I have been using this firmware and its successors since.

My request for correction is enable MKV container support in the Roku 3 profiles as part of the package's release from Plex.

I also request the default max bitrate for the Roku be raised. I cannot find / do not remember where it is stored anymore but used to be capped at about 8 Mbps. My televisions are capable of 35+ Mbps video (verified by copying file to a USB and plugging in directly). The Roku 3 itself has never had any difficulty with 8 Mbps (Plex has always been conservative in the number) and, with current firmware, no difficulty with 25 Mbps video for me even over Wifi.

Each time Plex releases a new version, I must manually add it to the DirectPlayProfiles

 <DirectPlayProfiles>
    **<VideoProfile container="mkv" codec="h264,mpeg4" audioCodec="aac,ac3" />**
    <VideoProfile container="mp4" codec="h264,mpeg4" audioCodec="aac,ac3" />
    <VideoProfile container="wmv" codec="wmv3,vc1" audioCodec="wmav2" />
    <MusicProfile container="mp4" codec="aac" />
    <MusicProfile container="mp3" codec="mp3" />
    <PhotoProfile container="jpeg,gif,png" />
  </DirectPlayProfiles>

and then add the upper bound

to the appropriate profiles. I ask this because while 20 Mbps was thought to be 'insanely' high some 18 months ago, it is no longer.

If you have trouble grasping what I'm saying, look at any movie with CGI in it at 10-15 Mbps and then watch it again at 20-25 Mbps. If you want a real treat, watch it at 30+ Mbps.

Here is an example of what ffmpeg reports for a growing percentage of my movies (output edited for brevity) and where I, as I am sure others, are headed.

Playback Randomly Stops after 5-20 minutes

So I recently started using Plex to stream playback to both my PC, Android tablet and phone. I have this reoccurring issue on all of my devices, while watching a video it closes randomly returning me to the movie or series info window. No error messages.

Info
Synology DS1815+ DSM 5.2-5644 Update 5 (latest as of today)
Plex Server Version 0.9.16.2 (Intel CPU version) (latest as of today, also happened on previous versions)
My router is an Asus RT-AC66U with the latest Shibby's Tomato firmware installed.

I haven't touched any of the playback settings yet, I was wondering if any of you guys have any recommendations?

Agents resetting to the first option in all areas

Hi all,

Today I upgrade to a full yearly plex subscription to take advantage of "Plex Premium Music" and the first thing I noticed was that there was no change, so I deleted the music library and started again and this time it allowed the service (although still warned I needed a subscription - which I guess is normal) - however the library metadata was no better - missing loads etc.

So I took at the agents and saw they were all set to the first item - Personal Media in Movies, Personal Media Artits in Artists and so on - no it lets me change them and alter settings and so on but when I go back in they have reverted to how they were before.

I'm on the latest version (0.9.16.2).

Any idea?

Thanks

External player and transcoding

Sorry for a newbie question.
Am I understanding this correctly? When Plex is set to use External Player (Kodi, VLC) on media player transcoding is not needed? Thus it doesn't matter what kind of CPU NAS has.

PGS subtitle cause a network error or buffering endless...

Hi all
since yesterday plex is buffering subtitles (pgs) on Samsung Smart Hub (v.2.005) in a endless loop or cause a network error.
I've a Synology DS213+ with the movies on local disk. The TV is a Samsung UE65HU7200S.
The main part of the question is, is the Synology strong enough to handle this kind of movies or do I need a Intel NUC or something?
The whole network ist gigabit wired with Cat6a cables.
PMS is version 0.9.16.2.
All the settings on the Samsung Plex App are default.

Thanks for your help!

Can't connect to PMS

I've been unable to connect to Plex Media Server (used to work 'til few months back) ever since I rebooted my Linksys WRT 1900 AC and my Synology DS415+ (DMS 5.2-5644 Update 5) running PMS 0.9.15.6.1714-7be11e1. I tried to stop, uninstall, then upgrade to the latest PMS (for Plex Pass: 0.9.16.2.1827-df572f6) but same issue. In Synology Package Center it says Plex Media Server is running.

Only other things that have happened:
a) my Linksys router ran an update when I rebooted it and seems to have reset itself - perhaps I've set something up wrong there?
b) while in Chrome running the Plex app, I opted to press "x" for the server entry hoping to add it again but now I can't see where to add it.

I am able to connect to my Plex Media Server via my iPhone's Plex app.

So, to recap:
1) I can't find the server in the plex app for chrome anymore (now it says "a server cannot be found")
2) When I launch Plex from my Synology NAS (e.g. http://myserver.synology.me:32400/web) I get "This site can’t be reached".
3) I can connect via my iPhone.

Grateful for any help provided.

Working on DS414j?

Hi,
I thought I read somewhere that Plex could be installed on DS414j so I did and when I had some issues I tried to find where I read it but could not find it. So my question is - should I expect to run Plex on DS414j? Maybe it is a prerelease and not stable and I should wait?

Using external transcoder for Synology NAS

$

I used to have Plex Media Server installed on my laptop and watch shows using my Chromecast. This worked perfectly! Bravo!

But recently I transferred all my media files to my Synology NAS (DS411) knowning that this NAS supports the Plex Media Server. What I didn't know/thought about was that this NAS obviously does not support proper transcoding, making the Chromecast setup unuseable. The problem is here, the NAS is simply not fast enough to transcode the video files for my Chromecast. But because this used to work on my laptop before I was thinking:

Is it possible to have the Plex Media Server installed on my NAS (with the associated database, meta information, etc.) but use an other computer for streaming/transcoding the media to the Chromecast?

I have mounted my media as Windows network drives on my laptop. So I just could install the Plex Media Server on my laptop, using the network drives as my library paths. But this means that all my 'I watched episode 1 of the TV Show X' kinda data will be tracked on my laptop instead of my NAS. Is there an existing way to do this or is it posslble to create an external transcoding application for the Plex Media Server?

2 questions about DS716+: Problems with mkv/DTS-files AND support for hardware transcoding?

Hi - as topic says, a couple of questions :)

  1. I have PLex running on my DS716+ but I am unable to stream mkv files with DTS sound to Chromecast without any stuttering. Works fine if the sound is AC3, so I guess it's putting too much load on the server. Any suggestions to improve the stream other than remuxing the file?

  2. Any chance that hardware transcoding will be supported by Plex on the DS716+?

Video playback quality plex Nas server

I have recently purchased a ds216play, which its great. I spend hours working, encoding my movies all to x264 mp4 with a size of 1 to 1.5gig per hr. Recently also got a 75" Sony android tv, which really shows flaws on bad encoded movies.... reason i'm redoing all my media. Ok so new Nas, have latest dsm, manually updated Plex server to PlexMediaServer-0.9.16.3.1840. I stream movies to tv they look bad, stream thru ps4 again same. No matter what i use (app on tv, ps4, phone/tab beam to tv) they all look bad. The movies look like when u take a picture and denoise it or adjust it to soften it. Smooth it, erase all the sharp details like seeing pores on a face. I planned on buying service but not when videos look like this. I play movie on VLC and it looks great play it thru plex the movies look smoothed out. I have set for original size etc just don't know what i'm missing. Is there some setting to make movies abit more cartoonish, lol

Set manual local IP-adress to Plex (and to get it to work with remote access using OPEN VPN)

Hi!

I have Synology DS1515+. DSM 5.2-5644 Update 5
I connected two ethernet cables so I have two ip-adresses. Plex is using one of them.

  1. Is there a way to me to manually change the ip-adress plex shoud be using locally on this NAS?
  2. Does someone have any experience using an Open VPN service and to get remote access to work. Any ideas, anyone? Is it even possible?

My idea was that maybe I could get the second local ip-adress on the NAS to not use the VPN in someway.
But I don't even know if thats possible in the first place.

Very thankful for answers.

Is DSM 6.0 Video Station now Plex underneath?

I was just looking through the DSM 6.0 RC features, since I heard bad rumors about the new backup, and saw Video Station. To me, it looks VERY similar to Plex with Synology's traditional Video Station default libraries. Is it?

Here is where I found it. What does everyone else think?

Recommendations for best transcoding NAS on $2k budget

$
0
0

I have a Windows Server right now running PMS and it's working reasonably well. It transcode for my current needs, but struggles a bit when I have multiple streams going.

What I hate about it is that it's not an appliance... being a Windows box, I have to deal with the upkeep of constant updates. Sometimes there are issues where I have to pull out an old LCD monitor since I can't connect through remote desktop due an issue here and there (aka it's never completely a headless experience).

So for this reason, I would prefer a NAS and know I need to spend way more since I need an Intel or AMD processor and a beefy NAS setup isn't cheap. I'm OK with that and willing to spend the money to get a more "set it and forget it" setup.

I wish there was a general "NAS" forum to ask this question more broadly, instead of being divided up by manufacturer. So I'm starting by posting question here and in the QNAP sub-forums since these seem to be the most popular.

So my question is this:

For a $2000 (NAS only, not including drives), what is the recommended "best" setup for someone that needs to transcode 1080p movies into 2 or more streams in parallel, with clients including Roku 2, Xbox One, Rasplex on Raspeberry Pi 2 and iOS?

I have seen recommendations for the DS1815+, which based on my research seems great except the CPU which while being a quad-core CPU, it's an ATOM so will struggle at more than 2 streams transcording 1080p.

So it really comes down to if you had my budget and needs, what is the "ideal" setup? Maybe another way to ask, is for those with a Synology today, if you could start over today, would you have gone with synology again or gone with a different make/model?

Help installing PlexPy

Hi,

I've been asking around for help with installing PlexPy. I tried to use docker, but I could not get the settings to save properly on a reboot of NAS. I tried to install via PlexPys Linux instructions but on a reboot I can no longer find the /opt/PlexPy directory.

Would like some step by step help.

Hi,

First of all thanks for reading my post en maybe helping me.

I have a Synology DS411+II which should be powerfull enough to stream SD. I just want to try if this is something I can use.

I've downloaded PlexMediaServer-0.9.16.3.1840-cece46d-x86.SPK and installed it manually on my Synology. This was going fine. Now I've opened the url (the_ipaddress:32400/web) and it keeps hanging on the left site with the following message:

Looking for servers
A server could not be found.
Download and install Plex Media Server,

and it will appear here.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
Can somebody help me please?

Thanks in advance
