Secure server or can anyone access it?

Heya,

I brought a Sunology 916+ and have setup a Plex media server on it, however, I find myself asking if anyone else can access it but me? I want it to be more or less password protected and accessable for me outside of my home.

Also wondering about the PLEX pass? Is it for unlimited amount of devices or just one?

Thanks in advance!

Is my NAS orphaned?

I have a DS112j currently running Plex 0.9.16.6.1993-5089475, or at least I was until I upgraded my DSM to "DSM 6.0.1-7393 Update 2". As I had read previously, I stopped Plex prior to the DSM update. When I tried to restart it, it wouldn't restart.

I thought that maybe the DSM update required a Plex update, so I went looking to see if there was a Plex update and indeed there was. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a PMS available for my NAS's processor anymore. The only PMS for an ARM processor is "PlexMediaServer-1.0.2.2413-7caf41d-arm7", which is for an ARMv7, not my DS112j's processor.

Does this mean that Plex is no longer supporting my NAS? Was I correct that the new Synology DSM prevents me from using the currently installed PMS?

Thanks for any thoughts....

External subtitles not seen/detected after upgrade to PMS 1.0

Ever since I upgraded to PMS 1.0, external subtitle files for new movies that I add are not detected. However, external subtitles for newly added TV shows are detected without problems. Any ideas how to fix this issue?

[Synology] Plex Server Version 1.0.0.2261 breaks AC3 playback

Before upgrading to the 1.0.0.2261 version I was able to play episodes of AC3 without issue. I am unsure whether it was natively supported previously or whether the transcode just worked better but I can now see it is marked as 'Audio:Transcode (aac)' while streaming and it stutters constantly giving me 'performance is not enough' errors until it makes me restart the stream. I assume it has always converted AC3 to AAC automatically with my set up though.

I have the same experience while using chrome browser streaming on my PC or my Nvidia Shield. Nothing else on my network or configuration has changed and I've tried restarting everything to resolve the issue. The really strange part is that my Synology doesn't even seem to be maxing out its processor when transcoding yet it still fails. I would definitely roll back if I could but it seems there are no clean ways of doing this.

Any insight, help or corroboration would be appreciated.

Plex Media Server's web interface "ipaddress:32400/web" no configuration options

I've recently installed the latest version of Plex NAS [Intel] to a Synology DS1815+.
When I go to its URL, instead of it coming up with all the normal server configuration menus, etc it brings up the same interface as "plex.tv/web". I've confirmed I'm going to the correct URL, and I'm signed into Plex.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi,
when I try to install Plex on my DS413j I get the following error:

The plex file is: PlexMediaServer-1.0.2.2413-7caf41d-arm7.spk
and Plexsing.key have been added.

I had an older download of the sw, PlexMediaServer-0.9.12.8.1362-4601e39-arm.spk but got a different error.
Here I was able to go one step further on the installation.

Any idea how to fix this?

Hello, today I installed Plex on DS214play with the latest DSM 6.0.1-7393 Update 2. I tried to add my movies and tv series, playing works fine but there is a problem. If I pause, forward or backward movie/tv series, it will play again from start (0:00:00).

Any fix please? Will be really thankful for your help.

this server is not powerful enough to convert video

Hello,

After upgrading to the latest version of Plex, I get this error for every movie I have in my playlist on the Web App. Funny thing, two different video files, having the same encoding but different resolution. The ones with higher resolution play on the Web App but the ones with lower resolution are not.

Any ideas how i can fix this?

Thanks!

Music Error (DS414)

I've been converting my CDs into mp3 since the late 90s. I have amassed a fairly large collection since then. Every time I try to add my music folder to plex, the service stops and will not restart. I must restart the NAS to get plex running again. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I am assuming it is due to the large amount of data I am trying to add and process. Is it possible to process the files using my desktop and transfer the data to plex so the NAS doesn't have to do the work? Or be able to use the processing power of the desktop to help? I've tried to add a few directories at a time, but that would take forever. I am running a DS414 on test version of Plex and DSM. Please let me know if you need any more information or logs. Thank you.

Plex app on Synology NAS stops running all by itself

Every few days the Plex app on my Synology NAS turns itself off. When I try RUN it goes through the motions but no 192.168.x.xxx link appears. So I uninstall and reinstall the Synology app, and everything comes back. But why does it do this in the first place. No other Synology app (including DVBLink) does this.

PLEX+btrfs=100% volume utilization?

$

so i notice whenever i use btrfs as my main storage format, PLEX will always keep my volume utilization at 100%.
i was not doing much, other than occasionally add some movie/tv shows.
and PLEX will be fine for a moment when it just starts, but after a while, it will keep volume utilization at 100%. if i then switch off PLEX, volume utilization will immediately drops to <10%. then, if i start PLEX again, everything will happen again.....

I'm using a DS3615xs, 12*6tb red (RAID 5, btrfs), xeon E3 CPU (upgraded from stock i3, but the same problem with i3), so performance of the box shouldn't be an issue.
also, i notice if i use the exactly same setup, except change btrfs to old school ext4, volume utilization will only hit 100% for a short period of time and then return to normal....

anyone else having the same problem? any advice.

h.265 support?

Is there any Synology NAS that supports proper h.265 playback (atleast 1080p) through Plex? I've seen DS216j has h.265 hardware but Plex doesn't seem to support it(?).

Buffering with low CPU usage.

Hi, I've rolled back from 1.0 to 0.9 and it solved my buffering problems, but I want to ask here anyways if this problem is common:

On my DS 1513+ on DSM6.0 and running PMS 1.0 I'm getting buffering on playback when plex transcodes, i.e. DTS to AAC audio track, but transcoder never goes above 25% CPU usage. instead I get messages and log entries that says it's a network issue. this happened after i upgraded from PMS 0.9 to 1.0. I've since downgraded again, and the problem disappeares

I don't have logs to show, since I'm now running 0.9.

DS216J - Plex Media Scan CPU Usage

$

Hi Guys,

Been searching through the forums here and on Synologys site to try and get an answer to this, but I've not been able to solve it yet so thought I'd just ask you guys direct.

Been running Plex server on my mac for about 6 months with no issue and finally wanted to get a dedicated box that did a few things and didn't require me to have the Mac running 24/7 to be able to access Plex, so started researching Plex compatible NAS's. Picked up a DS216j as it seemed to tick all the boxes and have been setting it up over the last few weeks.

My setup when I had the Plex server running on my Mac was to have Plex look at my iTunes TV Shows and movie folders. I'm an apple guy and want to keep using iTunes to manage the films and it worked perfectly. Add a film to iTunes, Plex picks it up, shows up on everything else - Xbox, iOS apps etc. Perfect.

When I was setting up the NAS I copied my iTunes folder structure from and library over to the NAS and then pointed iTunes on the mac at the network drive that was storing it. Essentially using iTunes on the mac as a front end for the library on the NAS. Not a supported use case for iTunes but as long as the mac and NAS are talking to each other it hasn't been an issue.

On the NAS I installed the latest version of PMS from the Plex site and set all my libraries up, pointing at the same folders on the NAS as they had been set up on my mac.

All has been working flawlessly EXCEPT for one thing. After a few hours/days of Plex happily running on the NAS it will start to have a runaway Plex Media Scan process on the NAS that uses 30-50% of the CPU.

I've told Plex not to generate thumbnails in the Library settings and have also told it to not scan folders for incremental changes in case that was causing the issue but I still can't seem to solve it. A restart of the NAS will see everything go back to normal and it will happily run without issue for some time before I notice that the process is stuck again. Manually asking Plex to do a library update won't cause the process to spike the CPU either.

Reading the forums here made me think that the scanner was getting stuck on a particular file but I've been through the logs and can't spot anything. I've uploaded the logs to here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4877406/Scan Logs.zip in case anyway wants to have a look and try and spot something that I've missed.

I'm so close to having the perfect setup with this NAS so any help anyone can give is much appreciated!

Unable to watch movie - ds216j

Hi everyone,

Sorry for my english i'm belgian :)

So my problem is that i installed a PMS on a synology ds216j, and i can't watch video on my pc or ps4.

With the app on the windows store it's possible to wtch but it's limited to 1 min with the free account. The same for android app on my phone.
If i want to watch it in firefox or chrome (when i connect directly on the server, via 32400 port), it says "this server is not powerful enough to convert video". The same on ps4 :s

How is it possible? I'm very surprised because 2 apps can read the format of the file :s

If you have some ideas..

Thanks in advance

Problem streaming 4K content

Hi all,

First time poster...

I've got a Synology DS415+ upgraded to 8GB RAM. Running 4x6GB WD 6Gbps drives in RAID10 and it resides on a 1Gbps network.

My TV (LG 55EG920V) has the Plex App and XPlay App installed and when streaming 4K content it can get very laggy. I have tried both having the media server and the tv do the transcoding but both end up with laggy video hanging often.

It was a large file of 60GB so i'm not sure if that made a difference as I can seem to play lesser file sizes. Also when I use a fast USB and plug it directly into the TV it plays fine.

It does indicate the network could be the issue but I wouldn't have thought so at 1Gbps which is more than enough bandwidth.

Any ideas?

Manual update on synology on a macbook pro?

$

this might sound like a stupid and easy question, but as a first time NAS user, I'm struggling to find the answer.

I installed the plex app for synology and when I run it, the web page comes up and I am presented with a manual update.
Downloading it is fine, but when I unpack it....where should I put it? What file goes where and how does it update the synology NAS?

Any help will be greatly received, cheers! :)

Nice person hacked me, I'd like to secure my Plex now

$

I've been using Plex for a while, years in fact, and thought I was very secure. Yes I had port 32400 open for the world, but I was signed into myPlex in the server (thinking this meant it suddenly was attached to my account, ie. password protected).

I hate to even post such a simple (I thought) question, but how do I put a password on my Plex server?

I run it on my Synology NAS, and as I said signed into it using myPlex account. It works great, and as mentioned, after signing into Plex iOS app outside home, I can access the Plex media just fine...

Apparently it's NOT secure, see screen shot when a nice hacker left me a little message:

I've disabled external access of 32400 port ASAP after seeing this message, and restricted it to my local network only (via firewall settings). I have since gone through the documentation and the only thing I can find remotely like putting a secure "password" on my PMS is using a pin, that is under the "users" section, I clicked the lock icon and made a pin.

Is this the ONLY secure step I can take to secure my PMS and open the port 32400 to the world and know it's secure that only I will be able to access my PMS media?

If you could please tell me or have a link to a document I need to go through to put a password on my server and make it secure while still being accessible externally, it would be much appreciated!!
