Synology DS916+: Fresh Plex Media Server install - Why can't I see my local plex server?

I recently purchased the Synology DS916+ NAS box with 32 TB of storage (21 TB as RAID 5 or there abouts). So far so good, I'm pretty pleased with it in general; how ever this was a strategic purchase, critically to rationalize my various vulnerable media stores in to one place, but critically also, to use as my Plex Media Server among other server roles I have in mind for it.

During setup, I created a disk group of the 4 8TB drives as is normal. I then created 3 partitions:

  • 5TB for my VM's / iSCSI / LUNS etc.
  • 10TB Data volume called 'Media' specifically for keeping all my various types of media via shares
  • 5 TB Data volume called 'Data' where All my packages installed via DSM will be installed along side numerous shares for my Software Libraries, OS Libraries and various other bumf.

I noted the Plex Key issue which was until I'd already installed Plex the first time; so I installed it, carried out the cert' import and changed the security to accept trusted 'Non-Synology' publishers. I then re-installed Plex (as previously on the 5 TB Data Volume, watching the NAS server happily rattle off the installation without any apparent issues or errors. I checked the install log for the install procedure in the Installed apps section on DSM and rubbed my hands gleefully, thinking I was about to get my teeth into the task of setting my brand new Plex Media Server and adding libraries etc. - NOPE! Wrong :-(.....

Plex does seem to have installed quite effortlessly and didn't seem to chuck up any errors or dialogue boxes indicating as such.

So...

I enter the 172..... IP address of my NAS server :32400/web/index.html# and I'm challenged for selecting a Plex user and entering a pin code, as expected. Once I land on the home screen though, I only have connection the the Plex cloud server but no sign of my own internal server. :-/

I'd like to think 20+ years as an IT contractor and consultant puts me in reasonably strong standing to remediate this issue myself; but alas no ... Plex fellow Plexarians, can anyone cast some light on my predicament or point out where I may have gone wrong?

Reset Plex Movie Agent? ("Plex Movie" does not pull Metadata for any Movies)

The Plex Movie agent does not appear to connect to anything to pull result upon scanning a movie file. If i create a new library with a single movie (in this case Thor) using the Plex Movie agent, no metadata will even be pulled for the file. If i change the agent to The Movie Database agent, the metadata is found and pulled down.

I can see that if I go to manually 'match' the movie file Plex Movie will always return "no matches found" (almost immediately) whereas The Movie Database appears to search for a few moments then returns a list of possible results as expected.





I've been having this issue for a long time and up until now I have just utilized "The Movie Database" agent to pull metadata for my library, however i know that this agent is non-optimal and I am missing out on some cool features like Extras that I would like to be able to take advantage of.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Conversion issues on FireTV Plex app

I am running the latest Plex app on both an Apple TV (4th gen) and a first gen FireTV box, as well as a Plex server on a WD EX4100 NAS system. Both have exactly the same video settings (for quality), however while I can play most content on the AppleTV without issues, the very same content on the FireTV refuses to play with the dreaded "This server is not powerful enough to convert video." message. Both boxes are on the same wireless network and only a room apart so I am pretty sure I can rule out network issues (other streaming apps work just fine on both devices, a router is close by). Has anyone else seen this or something similar before and can help? I have a feeling that this is a recent change but can't substantiate that claim (I am pretty sure I used to be able to stream everything perfectly fine on the FireTV up until a few months ago).

Some more details on file types: The ones I've observed this for are mostly single definition (SD) MPEG4 with MP3 audio, nothing fancy.

PMS - Unable to Find Media Server

Hi All, I had installed PMS on Synology DS216+II NAS, and was using without any issues. However, due to an issue, i had to format the HDD i had installed on the NAS. So, everything was removed as part of the format, and I had reinstalled DSM6.1 with the latest update. Post this, I had installed the latest version of PMS 1.4.3.3433-03e4cfa35, downloaded from Plex website.

Post this, I am unable to find the PMS listed in plex web portal (http://:32400/web). Referred to the multiple resolutions posted in this forum, and tried to uninstall / reinstall; stop/restart PMS app; Deleted Preferences.XML file and tried. Nothing worked.

Checking the logs, an error as '"response": "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?>\n\n"' is recorded. Not sure what should be the resolution. I had deleted my Plex login, and trying to find the DSM in the new Plex login created.

Your Plex Media Server does not meet the minimum requirements to run Alexa.

Okay, so I've added the Alexa Skill, and Authorised it, and it's all connected.

BUT Alexa, tells me my server does not meet the minimum required and it needs upgraded.

my version of Plex is 0.9.15 which I believe is the minimum required.

Remote Access is also enabled, and all in the green

Does Alexa Skill require Plex Pass ?

Issue with matching

I have my shows named Show - SxxExx - EpisodeName.mp4. Some shows recognize fine, but some try to recognize as the episodename instead of the show name. The Walking Dead is one that doesn't seem to match correctly. Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this?

Plex Media Sever fails to run after DSM update

I'm running a Synology DS216J NAS. Over the weekend the DSM updated, (I didn't realise, but I'd got automatic updates turned on). It is now running DSM 6.1.1-15101 Update 1.

I'm was running Plex Media Server 1.5.5.3634 on there.

I was away over the weekend, so didn't notice anything odd until last night when I returned home. I went to run my Plex and nothing would load. It wouldn't even connect to my server. I went in to DSM and stopped the PMS and then attempted to restart it. It would show as trying to connect then gave the error message "failed to run the package service".

I look online and saw reinstalling may help, so I removed the PMS and reinstalled, but it didn't work, I just got the same message and the package wouldn't start. I then tried installing the DSM version of Plex, again upon attempting to start the package I get the same message.

Can anyone help?

Unable to play 1080p Synology DS214se and Roku 2(2016 model w/Roku 3 proc.)

When I try to play a video *.mkv,(1920x804 1080p) from my DS214se and Roku 2 using PMS thumbnail comes up but stalls at 13%. I then get the following message, "Video Unavailable We're unable to play this video, make sure the server is running and has access to this video". I have no problem playing this file using the Roku Media Player app, using Cyberlink PowerDVD17 on the pc, or my blue ray deck. I converted the *mkv file to a *.m4v,(720x302 556p), and PMS has no problem playing it. Is the problem with my older DS214se? I thought since I'm playing within my network I did not have to worry about not being able to transcode and would be able to play it. If it is the DS214se I would be looking to update it with the DS716+ll. I also have looked at the WD MyCloud PR2100 but have read problems with an outdate PMS on it.
Any thoughts, suggestions much appreciated.

plex keeps scanning my library nonstop for weeks now and won't stop

I have an adult video library, and I notice that it's constantly scanning this library, its been weeks now and it's still doing the same thing. Is there a way I can prevent plex from scanning this particular library?

Can't add any folder to library

Hi guys I just bought a DS416play and having trouble with adding and folder to the library
PlexMediaServer-1.5.5.3634
DSM 6.1.1-15101 Update 1

I already have a huge library on my main computer but I want to move them to my NAS, doesn't really matter if all the info are not there as long as the movie files can be read

I've followed https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/191000/faqs-read-this-first?new=1 as best I can but to no avail

This is what plex shows me, as a test I put a few movie files in the plex folder with correct naming but it still does not see it

Under shared and user settings

it's doing my head in maybe I've left something out, just let the files copy over for the time being

Synology DS3615xs vs DS3617xs

Synology just released as new NAS, the DS3617xs. I want to let people know that if they were considering the DS3617xs over the DS3615xs that technically speaking there is only one difference in regards to Plex usage and that is the CPU. I own both units and have completely dismantled them for hardware comparison. Everything inside and out are identical with the exception of the CPU and cooler. Of course the motherboard is updated to handle the FCBGA1667 socket, but other than that they are the same. Yes the DS3617xs can run with 48Gb instead of 32Gb of the DS3615xs, but Plex does not need much memory to do any of its work. I think I max'd out at around 2Gb with a full load from Plex. I have 4Gb installed.

The DS3615xs uses a i3-4130 Haswell CPU and the DS3617xs uses a Xeon® Processor D-1527. Now several months ago I decided to upgrade my DS3615xs with a faster CPU. I found the best CPU to be a Xeon E3-1246L v3 Haswell. I could have shelled out another $400 and got the Xeon E3-1286L v3, but he spec were not that much higher and did not warrant the extra cash.

You will need to upgrade the CPU cooler as well. I used the Noctua NH-D9L. Key here is the socket support (FCLGA1150). Now I could have gone with a i7-4765T, but it lack the higher CPU clock speed, 3Ghz vs 3.9Ghz in turbo mode. Base frequency is about 1.5Ghz in difference. Even the DS3617xs' CPU has a slower base frequency of the DS3615xs by 1.2Ghz

There is about $1,000 difference with both units current availability and you can pickup the Xeon E3-1246L v3 for about $370 on Amazon and the Noctua NH-D9L for $55. Unit runs around 40C at full load with this setup.

Slow displaying of photos via plex - could I be doing something wrong or is this a fault?

I have several thousand photos on my DS213j NAS, all put there via the Synology uploader programme which uses the power of my laptop to create thumbnails of every picture which are then stored on the NAS as well for speedy display when called. I have been using the DS Photo App which allows me to view the photos on my IPad Air and this allows for rapid selection of photos and swiping between them but as a new convert to Plex I would like to display my photos through that instead along with my music and films etc. However, I have found that whilst the thumbnails load quickly in plex, the full screen pictures can take 8 seconds or more to load making selecting and viewing unuseable in comparison to DS Photo.
Whilst I am most concerned about usability of photos on plex for IOS, I experience similar delays in accessing photos using my Apple Mac.
Could I be doing something wrong or is the current version of plex slow with photos?****

No Dahboards

Hello,
a couple days ago my Plex Web App did not show the dashboards anymore. If i go to the libraries, I can still see the shows and movies. When I filter for unwatched it says that there was an unexpected error. As long asI have selected ALL, I can see all shows ect with all additional information (e.g. unwatched)

I reinstalled the server, but I still cannot see the dashboards.

I am running
PMS 1.6.1.3722
DMS 6.1.1-15101 Update 1
DS1812+

Hi Team,

Just two questions :

I would install a plex server on a NAS to reduce power consumption.

Question:

Is the nas DS716+ II with a Intel Celeron N3160 quad-core (1,6 GHz) processor correct fore transcoding HD and 4K movies?
The benchmark is at about 1600 -> Your website mentions 2000.

Question:

For compatibility reasons, I read that after updates, many people can't run Plex Server on their nas.
So, it is better to install a Plex Server on MacOS or Windows ?

Looking for the best system for my setup

Hi, I've been pondering around the forums and compability lists, however no sufficient answers have I yet received.
So my case is that I want to populate plex all over my household which in essence is 4 smart tv's, and I'm looking for the best NAS system to buy for them. As some of those smart tv's do not have plex apps in their app store I will utilize rasplex implementation behind them but 2 TV's have the Plex app capability. So my question is that what kind of NAS should I buy?
I'm tech savy but not much on encoding-decoding department.

Doesnt find english subtitles at all. / Out of sync after update.

Plex server on Synology NAS and client on samsung tv.

Am i the only one that cannot find any english subtitles ? and those that comes with the file when i download the tvshow/movie is out of sync?
It does however find polish, turkish and even chinese subtitles... Ive ofc checked that the settings order the system to find primaryli english and secondary danish....

And why is their so few option to regulate you out of those thousands of bugs in this system, if you cannot make a decent software, at least allow users to modify settings !
