Poor Audio quality

I have a DS 3615xs that is primarily dedicated to my Plex worlld. It has more than enough horse power to handle several streams of UHD video and audio should never be an issue. However the latest build (9.15.0) is causing some poor audio quality issues. A bit of a crackle sound. I confirmed this to be Plex by playing a regular audio CD of the same song. I also ruled out that my Synology, Roku 4, Denon AVR-X7200WA are not a fault by play music from the Synology Audio Station directly to my Denon AVR-X7200WA, playing streaming music from Roku 4 to my Denon AVR-X7200WA.

Basically by passing Plex all together. But every time I play music using Plex the quality drops tremendously and is some case so bad it starts to crackle.

My Audio path starts with the Synology DS 3615xs then my Roku 4 with the Plex app, then HDMI audio to my Denon AVR-X7200WA to output to my Polk LSiM707s.

If I recall correctly Plex has introduced a new feature that is to optimize the stream based on the connection type and/or bandwidth requirements. This is great for remote devices, but please leave us with manual control for local configurations. Not sure if Media Optimizer is for audio or not, but none the less something has changed that is causing this issue.

Some movies showing as release date 1970 in grid view, but release date info correct

I've been running PMS on a Mac Mini for a while and I was just experimenting with setting up my library on my Synology NAS instead.

I scanned one of my libraries but I have found that it is showing an incorrect release date for many movies. Often it shows them as 1970 or another year that is simply wrong.

If I edit an individual movie however, the release date is correct.

The year also shows incorrectly when I tried viewing from the iOS Plex client, so I assume this is a bug in the Synology PMS?

I'm running latest DiskStation on a DS1513+ and latest PMS downloaded today.

Slow displaying of photos via plex - could I be doing something wrong or is this a fault?

I have several thousand photos on my DS213j NAS, all put there via the Synology uploader programme which uses the power of my laptop to create thumbnails of every picture which are then stored on the NAS as well for speedy display when called. I have been using the DS Photo App which allows me to view the photos on my IPad Air and this allows for rapid selection of photos and swiping between them but as a new convert to Plex I would like to display my photos through that instead along with my music and films etc. However, I have found that whilst the thumbnails load quickly in plex, the full screen pictures can take 8 seconds or more to load making selecting and viewing unuseable in comparison to DS Photo.
Whilst I am most concerned about usability of photos on plex for IOS, I experience similar delays in accessing photos using my Apple Mac.
Could I be doing something wrong or is the current version of plex slow with photos?****

Remote connection shows wrong IP thus not working (Dual LAN 1x normal 1x VPN)

Setup
DS415+ with 0.9.15 PMS on it.
It is a dual LAN so I connected the NAS like this:

LAN1: IP is 192.168.1.238, with a normal connection to router 192.168.1.1 (gateway 192.168.1.1)
LAN2: IP is 192.168.1.224, with a normal connection to router 192.168.1.1 (gateway 192.168.1.1)
I also got a VPN connection (OpenVPN) which routes all of the Transmission/Download Station traffic over VPN.

The Service Order on my NAS is as followed:
LAN1 (on LAN1 I blocked Transmission and Download Station)
VPN (connected to PIA which is shared IP so no port forwarding)
LAN2 (on LAN2 I opened Transmission and Download Station)

This results in all traffic (not being Transmission or Download Station) going over LAN1 and the 'torrent' traffic is forced over LAN2 which is VPN protected. This makes my router accessible from outside, but disguises my 'torrent' traffic. Everything works like a charm, except.....no remote access for Plex.

Problem
Remote connection is not possible and when looking in PMS -> Server -> Remote Access, I see that it is not working because PMS is trying to get a connection over the WAN of LAN2 (which is a shared VPN), instead it should try to connect over WAN of LAN1 (which is the private WAN).

I have tried to set some firewall settings for blocking port 32400 on LAN2, hoping it would be forced to go over LAN1, but this did not help.

Looking at: https://plex.tv/pms/resources.xml?includeHttps=1
I see the following in the PMS section:

So it looks like PMS has both connections. Is there a way to change this, either in the NAS (routing all PMS traffic over LAN1) or in PMS (by forcing to use LAN1/IP adres 192.168.1.238, or by changing the WAN by hand in the 'Remote Access file'?).
I have looked at the routing tables and static routing on the NAS, but I can not find a way to do this and Googling doesn't help either. Have to note that I am somewhat familiar with networking, but not with routing tables and static routing, so maybe this is the solution, please help..

DS214 update needed for Apple TV4 to work?

My Apple TV4 tells me the DiskStation needs updating so I want to download a NAS file from the Plex website. However I need to choose from a list of formats (Intel, ARM, ARMV7, etc). Which one do I choose for my DS214 and how do I then install it? My current Plex software level is 09.12.3.1173-937aac3. I am not seeing the NAS on the Device List on the WebApp even though I am logged in. I presume this is because of outdated software.

Is PMS expected to be this slow on a DS1513+?

I've had PMS running nicely on a Mac Mini, serving various iOS and ATV4 devices.

I have no need for transcoding since everything is playable directly by iOS and tvOS devices so I wondered about taking the Mac Mini out of the equation and running PMS on my DS1513+ instead.

So yesterday I set it all up but I am finding it absolutely burns up the CPU on this NAS even just when I try and browse/filter stuff.

A couple of examples:

  • on an iPad just making it load up my TV shows (177 TV shows, most with various seasons) sends the CPU sky-rocketing to 97-100 on the NAS while it retrieves the list. The same operation connecting to the Mac Mini PMS library is virtually instant.

  • different iPad, took 20 seconds to bring up a library of just 8 French movies, causing the NAS to hit 99% CPU. Further, having delivered the list on the iPad, the CPU is still at 99% for a minute afterwards!

  • on the web browser I choose to Filter for Unwatched TV shows (I marked all as watched yesterday then went through and selectively marked a dozen or so seasons as unwatched to match the old Mac Mini library), and it's been sat there for several minutes spinning.

This is using the latest Plex Pass version of PMS for Synology NAS (Intel) and the latest version of DSM on the NAS.

My question is simple - are my expectations unrealistic? Or is this a bug? I checked the compatibility chart and I saw that the DS1513+ was listed as compatible but only being able to transcode SD.

I'm not aware of any problems with my NAS - certainly the Mac Mini PMS is able to access the media without any problems, streaming all over the house.

DS214Play & Xbox One

I've been using Plex with my Synology DS214Play for the past 18 months or so and it's combined great with my Xbox One and PS4, except for the past couple months. For whatever reason, out of the blue, it started stuttering on all of my movies - every 5-10 seconds - to the point where you can't watch the movie. This started happening a few months ago and is consistently happening now. Previously throughout the year it might occasionally happen once a month and restarting the Plex app on my Xbox One would solve the issue but not anymore.

Streaming movies with DLNA or the Video Station results in the movies playing correctly, but the Plex app just stutters to a halt. Checking on my Synology the CPU is getting worked to the max while using Plex and looking on the compatibility list I've noticed that the DS214Play isn't capable of transcoding 1080p - or even 720p!

I've been watching 1080p movies for well over a year without issues - what's the sudden change??

Closing Poor Audio quality post

Though I did finally resolve the issue, it does not relieve Plex from the issue. Plex was still at fault in handling my music library. So something changed since 9.14.0 and higher that caused my issue but a library refresh with new files rattled Plex enough to smarten up.

I'm interested to buy a new Synology NAS. but wouldlike to know if Transcoding in Plex is
supported on these machines. This is the new Alpine CPU

Maybe someone with a 215+ or 715 can test transcoding ?

For some reason the transcoder on my Plex server is constantly running even though nothing is connected or streaming to Plex. I restarted the service and it starts right back up. I'm on the latest version on Plex.

Plex fails to start on DS214 PLAY scheduled start times!!

Hi, Ive had this random problem ever since I bought the 214 last year. Sometimes plex starts, sometimes it doesnt. Most of the time it simple fails to start when the NAS boots up at 7 each evening. Im constanly pissing about having to run to the office in my cellar, boot up the mac to access the bloody 214 and turn on manually. A proper proper pain in tha arse.
Everything is latest firmware and updates.
Anyone else had this problem, please plex admin, help me out here. Posted about this last year!!!

IOError: [Errno socket error] [Errno 111] Connection refused

Its happening on every scan of my music library but then ends the service so it keeps crashing plex. I'm running version 0.9.15.0

idevices slow connection after update to 0.9.15 on synology

hi, I used to be able to stream well to my idevices (ranging from ipad 2 to an ipad pro) before the update. But after the update, it seems there is almost no buffer or so because the stream stutters every 2 to 5 seconds, depening on the idevice. I've checked the settings but except for the update, nothing has changed. Help, because my daughter is starting to give me the evil eye :)

Synology DS214play not powerful enough

So I've got a really odd question that started happening this morning. It looks as if the Fire TV app for Plex recently updated (as of today) and is causing some issues.

I keep getting the error "This server is not powerful enough to convert this video". Most of my videos are in MKV format and have had no issue playing. Since this morning however, it seems as though converting on the fly is causing issues. I know that the DS214play does not have the capabilities of transcoding 1080p video on the fly from MKV to MP4, which is what I believe it's trying to do, and is causing studder.

The second problem is that I get the same errors when I do the same thing on the PS4. When I use Plex to try to play some MKV files through the Plex application, it studders. However when I play the same video through the DLNA Media Player built into the PS4 it works just fine.

Here are some of the things I have tried, to no avail:

  • Downgraded the Plex server to the last known working version
  • Reinstalled the Plex application on the Fire TV
  • Reinstalled the Plex application on the PS4
  • Converted the MKV to MP4 format using Handbrake (this solution works but will be tiresome to convert all former MKV files and reorganizing the library once that has completed)
  • Run in the web browser on my local machine where MKV files work (this also worked but is not conducive to long term use)

If anyone has any issues where they can point me in the right direction it would be helpful. I'm not in the market to find another Synology just to get this working correctly, and I feel like the fact that MKV formats worked fine 'til 24 hours ago shouldn't make me have to change the file format for all of my videos.

If there is no way around changing the videos, I'll move away from Plex until the issue gets resolved.

How to mount on Ubuntu

Hi,

I'm new to Ubuntu and am trying to map my drives to index all folders. When trying to find the folders, the mounted drives don't show up.

Does anyone know how to best get this set up? I wanted to try with a guest account following this guide but not sure about how safe that is: http://askubuntu.com/questions/345087/how-do-i-add-a-network-drive-to-plex

When setting up a dedicated plex user on my Synology DS215, I get prompted for a password so there seems to be an issue with user permission.

Would someone be able to help me walk through their setup? I've been stuck for several hours and not sure what to do next.

Apple TV says I have to upgrade my synology ds213 but impossible to do it manually. It says that the latest version 0.9.12.19 says that this package is not allowed in the synology platform. Anyone same problem?

DS214play and 0.9.15.0

After recently upgrading PMS 0.9.15.0 on my DS214play I am having problems playing back all of my mp4 files on my xbox box one and android devices. Playback on PCs is not a problem, and thusly I suspected a transcoding issue. Prior to the update I had PMS configured to direct play, direct stream, and I turned off subtitles as I never watch media with them. However, nothing I have tried is working so far and I can't seem to find where subtitles can be turned off.

Anyway, I realize that the ds214play is not a powerful media player however I never had a issue playing my mp4 library of cycling races I frequently download. I am hoping I am just missing some hidden settings that have been introduced or renamed in the new version. For example, I no longer see the option to use the experimental player?

source or destination ports for synology firewall?

I'm trying to open up local ports for PMS on my new Synololgy DS1515+. When I go through the "create firewall rules" wizard to create custom rules, there's an option for "source" or "destination" as the type of port. Not sure which to choose here, or why.
Would someone mind explaining this to me? Thanks!
