I have been running Plex and other software on my DS918+ for the past 5 months and was rather unsatisfied with the performance of it.
I started with 2 8TB (shucked) Western Digital Easystore drives in an SHR-1 Disk group with a single BTRFS volume.
I/O operations were much slower than I was expecting. I even installed more RAM (12GB total) and a 256GB M.2 SSD cache. These things helped, but it was still slow. Whenever there was anything using any I/O, other applications would suffer. Whenever Hyperbackup was running, the NAS was practically unusable for anything else. This was especially annoying since my initial backup took about 24 hours to complete.
Today I finally was frustrated enough to wipe my entire NAS and start over.
When I reformatted it, I chose to make 2 different volumes: EXT4 for the main volume and a smaller BTRFS volume for virtual machines.
Once my restore from backup was complete, the difference was night-and-day. Performance is MUCH better. Everything runs as I would expect now. I am running Hyperbackup now and I'm able to use other apps without issue.
Despite Synology pushing its users to use BTRFS, I would not recommend it if you wish to install Plex and/or any other apps on your DiskStation.
Synology 918+
PMS Version 1.13.0.5003 (64 bit)
Client - doesn't matter. I've reproduced it on everything I have, Roku, XBone, Mac, Chrome, etc.
This is direct play, no transcoding
When playing from the beginning of any media everything works fine. Resuming the same media at any point causes PMS to loop requests on different ports until the server crashes.
There is no other activity on the server, I clean started everything with nothing in the logs. It's 100% reproducible every time.
Here is part of the loop. I can provide the logs if required.

Hello everyone! I'm really struggling here so any help would be appreciated. Sorry in advance because I know this topic has been done to death but I have read every thread and tried all suggestions but have had no success. So, here are the facts:
I have a Synology 1817+ NAS. It runs Plex and the server address is 192.168.1.17 (I believe this is a static IP).
I also have an openVPN configuration through "Control Panel->Network->Network Interface" (this appears to assign a different IP address each time it connects). Login credentials come from UseNetServer for VPN access.
The modem/router is a D-link DSL-4320L connected to a PPPoE Fibre connection. Port 32400 has been forwarded both TCP and UDP. Despite this, canyouseeme.org cannot see this port as open. I am consistently met with a "connection timed out" message. The modem/router appears to support UPnP.
The NAS firewall is currently deactive (I have previously created a rule allowing all ports from all locations, but this didnt seem to work).
The NAS has Antivirus Essential which I have tried both on and off but still no success with connecting to Plex outside my network.
Currently, Plex shows my public IP as 173.245.209.51 (although I have seen this as 173.245.209.50). I have tried manually specifying a port for Plex (32400), this doesnt seem to work. I have also let Plex choose the port and this changes each time I try to connect however I was still unable to connect outside my network.
I have also tried adding IP/netmask entries to "List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth" within the Plex settings.
The frustrating thing is that when the VPN is disconnected, remote access connects and my server is visible outside the network.
Sorry for the novel but I wanted to provide as much information as possible. Thanks so much for any advice/information/direction. I'm tearing my hair out over this one!

Hi.
Please can someone help... I'm brand new to Plex and am keen to get it up and running ASAP but am having some difficulty. These are my devices all on the same home network:
I have a Synology DS215j running version DSM 6.1.3-15152 update 3
BT Homehub 6
Windows 10 laptop
I am using my laptop web browser to access my Synology. I have installed Plex Media Server on the Synology (version 1.8.1.4139) . Plex Media Server is running and when I click the URL on the Synology to open Plex (https://192.168.1.254:32400/web) the URL opens a new tab on my laptop web browser and asks my to login with my Plex account. I login and this is where I get stuck ... I'm faced with this screen:
Confused what I need to do??? Plex Media Server is already running on the Synology. Why can't the browser see it?
Can someone please help? Ideally quickly as it's driving me mad!
Hi,
When Plex server will support Synology DS118 with Realtek RTD1296 CPU - ARMv8?
Thank,
Hi there!
I am using Plex for over a year now, but recently it is not working any more properly. I haven't changed any of my Server / Plex / Router Settings.
First, my Brother told me, that he can't reach our Plex server from his home anymore, so I checked the Settings.
It said "Not available outside your network", so I turned it off and on again, till it was green.
But still, as soon as I tried from outside my network, it did not work anymore, and it is showing "not available" again.
I tried a lot, Restarting Router, the server, PMS and so on, but I could not figure out what the problem is.
I tried several ideas from this forum, but those that I am capable of did not work. When answering, please understand, that my Server knowledge is NOT professional.
I don't understand it anymore, and it is becoming really annoying. I would be happy if anyone could help.
Thank you very much in advance.

I have read many answers but nobody seems to be sure about which format of file system to use. I created a RAID 5 with 4 HD. Btrfs seems to be the ultimate solution to avoid has much has possible any data loss and protect the data with snapshots and use data integrity protection. Some say this is **** and ext4 should be used for Plex Server. I'm confused and I want to do the right choice before transferring over 15 TB on this beast!
Thanks in advance for the answer!
Hi.
I'm having difficulties watching some of my .mkv files. I'm not sure if it will be better with hardware transcoding instead of software transcoding? I have tried googling for an answer of how much performance difference there is on hardware transcoding instead of using the software transcoding opportunity, that is for non plex pass users?
It is lagging when watching a .mkv file h.264 1080p on my Samsung TV QE55Q7, and subs are srt. Cpu usage is 99% I use the built in tv plex app.
What settings should I use, to avoid the buffering/lagging, as it is very annoying that the movie stops every minute for few seconds?
I have attached the logs after the lagging occurred. I started the movie, when it stopped, I waited until it started again, then paused the movie, waited about 30-40 seconds and then downloaded the log ( Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs )
I use a Synology 718+ running version Version 1.12.3.4973 64 bit intel version from https://www.plex.tv/downloads/
xml and logs are attached
Thank you in advance for any help.
Christian.
Is there a way to stop Plex which automatically starting upon NAS power up? Thanks!

i have a lot of shows on my plex and most of the time when i add a file or a folder plex automatically adds it without problems. but i have a show of which i want to add a fourth season but whatever i do, plex doesn't want to add. i renamed everything just as specified. S04E01. the format is mkv so plex should be able to handle this. i also put the mkv through handbrake. i put al lot of episodes through handbrake when they are too big for my taste but plex Always recognizes them without error. i put the folder in and out a couple of times. added a new folder, renamed it and then added the files. take the entire show out, erase trash can and then put it back in but then it only sees three seasons. so whatever i do, plex sees that i have added something, scans the directories and doesn't add a thing and stops again. what can i do???
Plex is currently loaded on my DS916 Synology NAS and I want to move all of the Metadata to a local SSD drive
I don't mind re-loading my library from scratch if I have too. The location does not show up in advanced as it does on a windows setup
Thanks

hi plex team,
i have a constant problem after update of my synology 415+ with PMS. it keeps stopping after few minutes. log files included. thank you for help
Hey guys,
I recently switched to a DS918+, which I love! I tried to get my setup running again so I installed Plex, JDownloader, FileBot, filled up my media libraries...
My problem is a bit tricky and I know it's not directly related to Plex itself, but I don't know where to ask instead. JDownloader triggers an event script to start FileBot and rename my media. That works fine. The owner of the downloaded files is root and the permissions are for the admin group to have read/write permissions. But when FileBot moves the renamed file to the media folder, the moved file is still owned by root, but it's permissions are gone. So as one would expect, Plex can't find and add these files to the library.
Did anyone of you ever experienced a similar problem? Any help yould be appreciated!
Greetings,
Cola
Hi,
any chance that you will publish a plex pass repo for synology devices so we can use DSM auto update?
Kind regards,
Peter
My 916 is on DSM 6.1.4-15217 Update 5
My plex is on Version 1.10.1.4602
I was sure that the Synology supported Hardware Transcoding, my shield does but I am having issues with that so swapped over to the synology as my PMS but where there should be a tick box option (where there is one on the shield) there is just no option on the Synology.
Thanks again
Ryan
